We often hear the food being spoken of as 'what we put in our mouth', or 'what our body is made of'. But what exactly is the connection between food and human health? And can we truly determine the effect of what we eat? In this article, we look at how food affects your health and how to make it work for you.
Everyone thinks they know how food makes you feel, but most don't. It's not something you just go into a restaurant to have a talk about, because the food has a whole host of effects on your health. One of the most popular old standby meals is, of course, pasta and tomato sauce. Both are high in starch, which means they contribute to weight gain, and both are of course rich in sugar and fat. On the other hand, by eating less of these two things, you can also see a difference in how you feel. This can be attributed to the fact that they are in fact fat-soluble nutrients - those that need to be broken down before the body can absorb them. These nutrients then end up in the bloodstream, where they eventually get digested and used for energy. Salt is actually considered to be healthy, because it keeps the blood low in sodium. However, salt isn't actually something we usually need. It can cause us to feel tired, lethargic and often causes problems with blood pressure. The salt in food comes from salt mines and also comes from the minerals naturally found in rocks. Processed foods are known to be unhealthy for several reasons. One of these is the fact that they contain high levels of sodium, which can lead to high blood pressure, not to mention that they are full of harmful additives that will ruin your stomach over time. Therefore, if you are susceptible to headaches, you might want to avoid eating large amounts of processed food. Processed foods tend to be either very sweet or very salty, so you can imagine the effect this can have on your digestive system. Foods that are high in fibre are also good for you. This is due to the fact that they keep you regular, and help you maintain a healthy body weight. They also lower the chances of you getting constipation, which is why many people prefer to eat beans and pulses instead of high carbohydrate foods like bread. Some foods actually increase the chance of getting colon cancer. These include red meat, red wine, coffee and alcohol. Some foods however, actually help with a weak or strong colon. Some examples are some nuts and seeds, which are rich in antioxidants, and good for the gut and the liver. The better choice is fresh fruit and fresh vegetables, as they are full of fibre, which helps to make you feel full, and they help the digestive system get going. In fact, fresh food is actually quite good for your colon, but it is also advisable to avoid eating too much sugar and starch as these can easily clog up the pipes in your colon. So, there you have it, five different things that you can use to know more about food. We all know that food does affect our health, but knowing the difference between good and bad food can help you make better food choices. At the end of this article I would like to recommend you great TV show about food - Kitchen Nightmares, especially episode about Hot Potato Cafe. This is one of my favorites. By watching this, you may see good examples of good and bad food.
